5 Necessary Goals For Memorizing the Quran

Every action is preceded by intention, so is memorizing the Quran. Memorizing the Quran shouldn't just be because someone asked you to do it or because you want to be known and accorded as a Memorizer of the Quran.

You need to look at Quran memorization as an act of worship. Memorizing the Quran is also far beyond completely memorizing it, but also a lifelong journey.

You will also want to imbibe its teachings, apply its lessons in your life and ensuring it becomes a Hujjah (proof) for you and not against you on the Day of Judgment.

Your ultimate goal is to get the benefits of memorizing the Quran in the Hereafter.

Below are five necessary goals you should have for memorizing the Quran:

1. Seeking Allah's pleasure and closeness to Him

The people of Allah are the people of the Quran. Anas ibn Malik reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah has His own people among humanity.” They said, “O Messenger of Allah, who are they?” The Prophet said, “They are the people of the Quran, the people of Allah and His chosen ones.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 215)

Memorizing the Quran and acting according to it dictates make you not only among the people of Allah, but also Allah is pleased with you and grants you goodness in both Worlds. This should be the priority and main goal for memorizing the Quran.

2. To improve and concentrate more in solat

Maintaining Khushoo (concentration) in prayer is highly necessary to have the full reward of our prayers. Among the attributes of a successful believer is the one who in his prayer concentrates appropriately. In other to concentrate well, memorizing the Quran and understanding the Quran is necessary. It enables one to ruminate on the Ayaat being read and gain more reward for solat.

Memorizing the Quran also enables one to elongate one’s prayer as much as one wish, thereby gaining more reward from it.

3. To inculcate a lifelong engagement with the Quran

The goal for memorizing the Quran should also be to develop a lifelong relationship with the Quran. Not only to memorize it and that's all, but also to further understand it and inculcate its teachings in your life. This makes you among the people of the Quran who are the people of Allah.

4. To be among the preserver of the Quran

Allah has perfected and protected the Quran, nothing can be changed and can never be manipulated from it for centuries and generations to come. Among the ways of Allah preserving the Quran is giving Muslims the ability to memorize it.

As a Muslim, one should aim to memorize the Quran and be among Allah’s servants preserving the Quran and the religion on earth. Allah says, “It is certainly We Who have revealed the Reminder (Quran), and it is certainly We Who will preserve it” (Q15:9).

5. To gain the virtues and benefits of memorizing the Quran

In our last blog, we mentioned among the benefits of memorizing the Quran; salvation of oneself and family members to being in the company of the elite angels and prophets.

Notice that practice comes first, followed by the virtues. You should endeavor to practice whatever you memorize and hope to gain reward from it. The virtues of memorizing the Quran can't be attained except with practicing its teachings.

I shall be ending with the Hadith from Umar b. Al-Khattab (May Allah be well pleased with him), reported that the messenger of Allah said: “Actions shall be judged according to intention, and every man is rewarded with what he intended". (Bukhari and Muslim).

So, redefine your goals for memorizing the Quran for you to get the rewards and benefit from the virtues of this noble act.

I pray that Allah grants us all Tawfik and purify our intentions for memorizing the Quran.
